New Mexico Spring Turkey

We had a difficult season here in New Mexico this past spring.  The weather was not our friend!  The first weekend, we had a horrible storm come in with high winds, heavy rains, and in the higher elevations, snow.  It calmed down some and my first hunters both killed out their first day.  The next group of hunters that came in were not quite as fortunate.  The evening they arrived, it began to rain.  By morning, we had 4 inches of snow on the ground.  By the end of the morning hunt, we had 12 inches on the ground.  Then the wind began to blow!  By the morning of day 3, we had 18" and it was still coming down, so we switched gears and headed out to the flats and called coyotes all the rest of the final day.  We had 4 coyotes come in to 7 different stands.  We killed one and scared 3 others really badly!  They ended up having a lot of fun, even though it was disappointing for everyone to have the weather be what it was.  On a side note, we did kill a big tom in a short break in the weather on day 2, so it was not all a loss.  My final hunter missed a bird the first morning, but redeemed himself the second morning with a great shot on his first Merriams!  I am booking hunts for 2017, so if you are interested in coming to the New Mexico High Country for your Merriams, give me a call!  In the meantime, I am starting to scout for Antelope, Bear, deer, and elk.  Hope to see you soon!
