DSC_0142.jpgAndrew Reschke was born and raised in Naples, Florida, and grew up spending countless hours fishing Naples and the surrounding areas. A graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a BA in Environmental Studies and a strong passion for science and the outdoors, Reschke knows a lot about the ecosystems in Southwest Florida.

Most days you can find the Captain out fishing on his 18' Action Craft in the Ten Thousand Islands, a chain of islands and mangrove islets off the coast of southwest Florida.

How did you get into this business? What made you decide to become a fishing guide?

Captain Andrew Reschke

A buddy of mine in Alabama used to run a very successful bow fishing charter service, and he helped me get a good head start on the business side of things. He really opened my eyes to a lot of things I hadn't considered or thought about, so that was a really big help to me. After I graduated college was when I really decided that I wanted to start guiding. I think it had been in the back of my mind for a while as something I wanted to try. I did a couple of internships that I really enjoyed, but those also helped show me that I would rather be on the water fishing. I also really like sharing the beauty of the areas that I fish, and a lot of the wildlife and scenery that you can see during a day on the water most people don’t get to experience in a lifetime.

Where do you take your clients to fish?

Captain Andrew Reschke

I mainly fish around Marco Island, Cape Romano, and the Northern 10,000 Islands out of Goodland, Florida. There’s a lot of different ways to fish this area and a lot of different fish to catch depending on the time of year. I also particularly like to fish at night along the Marco River on the north side of Marco Island and Naples Bay further to the north. Depending on the target species, we can fish anywhere from out on the beaches to backcountry bays and creeks.

What is your favorite fish to catch? What fish do you primarily fish for?

Captain Andrew Reschke

That's a really tough question. I love Redfish, Tarpon, and Sharks; but for me, Snook fishing is hard to beat. There’s so many different scenarios that are possible when Snook fishing. Some days they can seem like the easiest fish in the world to catch, and other days they are so picky that it makes you crazy. During the winter months I primarily fish for Sheepshead, Trout, and Black Drum. Sheepshead are great eating fish and are usually plentiful in the cooler months. During the warmer months I fish for Snook, Redfish, Sharks, and Tarpon. These are all great fish to catch and they can all be targeted with either artificial or live bait.

Do you have a favorite fishing adventure you'd share with our readers?

Captain Andrew Reschke

I was fishing with a client on a really hot, muggy morning in July. We arrived at our first spot of the morning in search of Redfish and Snook. I baited his hook with a frisky live mullet and cast over to the mangroves and handed him the rod. Almost as soon as the mullet hit the water the rod doubled over and the drag started screaming. The fish immediately headed straight into the mangroves and got wrapped around multiple branches that were sticking into the water. Without thinking, I grabbed the rod from him and jumped into the water with the rod in hand. I frantically waded through the waist deep water and the sticky mud bottom towards the trees. As I neared the mangroves I could still feel the fish pulling on the end of the line. Trying not to make the tangle worse, I started doing my best to carefully unwrap the line from the branches and roots. Working as fast as I could, I safely got the line out of the multiple branches the fish got wrapped up in. The fish then took off with a new burst of energy, this time thankfully away from the mangroves. I made it back to the boat and gave the rod back to my guest so he could finish off the fight. It ended up being a nice oversize Redfish. It was a both hectic and memorable way to start off the morning.

A lot of people ask when the best fishing is. It depends on what you want to fish for, there are always fish to be caught. The fish biting vary throughout the year through the different months.
