It doesn't get much better than this. Central Coast Outfitters has access to a vast collection of prime ranch real estate that includes several ranches averaging 25,000 to 46,000 acres, spanning across much of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey counties in California that is host to a healthy population of wild game--Tule elk, deer, turkeys, wild pigs, quail, and bobcats. In 2010, Central Coast Outfitters expanded their operations to New Zealand where they deliver some of the most exciting and affordable hunts offered anywhere in the world for red stag, wapiti (elk), fallow deer, tahr, chamois, alpine goat, arapawa ram, and wild boar.
Dream Sporting Trips writer caught up with the very busy Alfred Luis, CEO of Central Coast Outfitters, LLC. Luis is a professional guide and accomplished big game hunter with several SCI (Safari Club International) trophies in the books.
Luis grew up hunting and fishing in the Los Alamos Valley, California. His first passion was fishing, particularly for Marlin, and he needed a way to pay for his fishing excursions. He used to cut wood and sell to restaurants. He recalls, "I thought surely there must be a better way, so I decided to start my own hunting service." Chuckling, he said, "Now I have no time for fishing!"
We asked Luis how he came to expand his business in New Zealand, and he explained that when hunting there, he met a friend who was also an avid hunter. One thing led to another, and now Central Coast Outfitters offers some of the best, most affordable hunts in New Zealand. Luis travels there yearly, and stays for about a month at a time.
What is his personal favorite game to hunt? "Tule elk and turkeys here in the U.S. and fallow deer and tahr in New Zealand. My clients primarily request to hunt Tule elk, blacktail deer, and black bear here in California."
What is the most common question he gets from potential customers/clients? "What caliber should I use?"
