Ask almost anyone what the best tasting fish in the sea is, and you'll likely hear, "Grouper!"
Catching a grouper is not necessarily an easy task for an angler. It requires a good set of skills, commitment, and patience… but once you pull in your first one, you'll be hooked.
When you go fishing for grouper, expect a rugged fight, the possibility of a truly big fish and—best of all—an excellent meal at the end of the day.
Grouper generally live around reefs and, when hooked, will make a powerful run to their favorite hideout. They don’t have a lot of stamina, but that initial surge can catch you off guard if you aren’t paying attention. For this reason, even relatively small grouper often require fairly heavy tackle because of the amount of drag necessary to keep them from their reef.
Adult grouper live in deep water and are usually found around natural structures at depths from 60-250 feet deep and occasionally over 500 ft. Young grouper can be found in nearshore waters, bays, and other estuarine waters. Size is related to water depth, with average size increasing as the water becomes deeper. Fish for the adult grouper by locating a deep spot near rocks, dropoffs, or ledges, and dropping a line as deep as you can because grouper are going to be on the bottom.
